MANILA, Philippines – The University of the East Warriors played tough defense down the stretch to pull off a 78-73 win over the Tigers of the Univesity of Santo Tomas in Saturday’s second game of the 71st University Athletics Association of the Philippines season at the Araneta Coliseum.

“We played good defense. Even though we were small my boys played aggressive and tough defense,” said UE coach Dindo Pumaren, who is trying to erase last year’s nightmarish finals campaign against the De La Salle Green Archers.

The Warriors nearly wasted a 12-point third quarter lead and let the Tigers slowly come back from the game.

The Tigers nearly pulled off a come-from-behind win when they held the Warriors to a single field goal for more than five minutes in the final period.

Veteran Elmer Espiritu saved the Warriors cause down the stretch scoring seven straight points in a closing 9-4 rally to foil the Tigers upset bid.

Espiritu scored a team-high 15 points to lead a balanced scoring attack for the Warriors while also grabbing nine rebounds.

Espiritu got plenty of help from Hans Thiele and guards Marcy Arellano and James Martinez who finished with 13, 11, and 10 each. Arellano also had seven rebounds and seven assists.

Jervy Cruz, playing with a hamstring injury, paced the Tigers with 26 points and 22 rebounds 12 of which coming in the offensive end.

Dylan Ababou backed him up with 15 points while Chester Taylor chipped in 10 more for the Tigers. -GMANews.TV

We were admittedly sceptic when we first heard of the 2008 remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still, starring Keanu Reeves and Jennifer Connelly.

The project has remained largely under wraps over the past few months, but Twentieth Century Fox has now unveiled the very first trailer. To our surprise, it doesn’t look all that bad. It almost has a War of the Worlds meets Day After Tomorrow feel to it. Check it out below and let us know what you think.

The movie’s official synopsis is as follows:

Updating the 1951 sci-fi classic’s Cold War and religious themes, Keanu Reeves stars as Klaatu, a mysterious man from another world who warns Earth’s humans that unless they change their gluttonous and harmful ways and pay more attention to the planet’s needs, aliens will swoop down and destroy them for good.

Interesting? We think so. There’s probably no need for yet another remake, but they aren’t always bad, and we’re willing to give this one a chance. After all, who doesn’t enjoy a good ol’ alien invasion?

The Day the Earth Stood Still reaches UK theatres on December 12th 2008.

You’ve seen her as a young hunchbacked bell ringer in Kampanerang Kuba, a lovable tomboy in Sineserye Presents May Minamahal, and a love struck woman in Maging Sino Ka Man 1 & 2 plus a host of other roles. Anne Curtis can wear any hat imaginable with her acting prowess. So it comes as no surprise that she has been tasked with the multiple roles as the lead in Dyosa.

Directed by Wenn Deramas, Dyosa tells the story of Josephine, who as the daughter of legendary Bernardo Carpio and Mariang Sinukuan, is a goddess in her own right. She lives as an ordinary mortal until she turns 18 and her real destiny is revealed. As Dyosa, Anne will breathe life to not just one but three divine personas, namely: Goddess of Air (Dyosa Cielo), Goddess of Water (Dyosa Agua), and Goddess of Earth (Dyosa Tierra), plus her human identity as Josephine.

To match the three facets of her divine role in Dyosa, three of the most sought-after heartthrobs in the industry—Sam Milby, Zanjoe Marudo, and Luis Manzano—will play opposite Anne. What part will they play in Josephine’s extraordinary life? And more importantly, who among them will win the elusive heart of the one and only Dyosa?

Stepping off a calibrated scale in a routine weight check Roach has incorporated into the training session, Manny Pacquiao declared himself fit to accomplish the task.

The Filipino icon faces World Boxing Council lightweight champion David Diaz on June 28 (June 29, Sunday in Manila) at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas and Roach doesn’t want the reigning WBC super featherweight titlist to merely scrape past a third straight opponent.

He wants Pacquiao to stand over a fallen Diaz at the end of the match.

“I feel (a knockout) will come in the later rounds,” Roach said. “We’ll eventually break (Diaz) down.”

Pacquiao’s last two bouts have left Roach wanting something more decisive. Marco Antonio Barrera survived 12 rounds against the Gen. Santos City brawler. And Pacquiao needed a close decision to strip Juan Manuel Marquez of his super featherweight belt.

This time around, Roach feels Pacquiao must stop Diaz to legitimize his status as the world’s No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter.

And with Pacquiao needing a little less effort to make the weight this time around, Roach feels the powerful southpaw has the edge over Diaz in almost all aspects and should find little trouble controlling the tempo of the 12-round bout, to be aired by HBO pay-per-view.

Pacquiao tipped the scales at 139 after Saturday’s workout and that’s exactly the number both boxer and trainer want to see at this stage of their preparation.

“Tama lang ang 139, mahirap namang masyadong mababa agad (Being 139 is just right, it’s also hard to lose weight so quickly),” Pacquiao said.

“It was better than expected,” said Roach, who gave Pacquiao the go-signal to take a break on Sunday. “Four pounds with one week to go, we’re going to be all right.”

Asked what the Mexican-American Diaz could do to halt Pacquiao’s conquest of the 135 lb ranks and succeed in a bid to become the first Asian to win four titles in different weight divisions, Roach boldly replied: “Nothing.”

Roach said Pacquiao’s speed and power would overwhelm the “durable” Diaz.

“Manny’s speed may not be the same as when he’s 130, but definitely he will be much, much faster than Diaz,” Roach explained after watching Pacquiao spar for three rounds each against Julio Gamboa and Steve Quiñones.

The most reputable company in America: Google, which toppled Microsoft from the top perch in the 2007 Harris Interactive Reputation Quotient study released today — and sent it tumbling all the way down to No. 10.

But what should be even more eye-opening to the companies rounding out the top 10 — which include Johnson & Johnson and General Mills – and the rest of the list is that Google’s victory shows that a company that spends nothing on advertising can still be the most positively perceived by consumers.
“Google is the perfect example showing reputation does not correlate with ad spending,” said Robert Fronk, senior VP-senior consultant, reputation strategy, at Harris Interactive. “The positive perception of how you treat your employees, your corporate-social-responsibility efforts, and your products and services and the amount of media that can generate probably trumps any ad spend they would ever want to make.”

That’s not to say big business in general came out well in the study: 71% of consumers said the reputation of corporate America is either “not good” or “terrible.”

The Harris study, intended to measure the reputations of the most visible companies in the U.S., was conducted in two phases. The first involved phone and online interviews of more than 7,000 people to identify the 60 most visible companies. The second phase, conducted six months later, included 20,000 online interviews with U.S. consumers asking them to rate those companies’ reputations on 20 attributes in six categories: emotional appeal, products and services, social responsibility, vision and leadership, workplace environment, and financial performance.

Berkshire anomaly
Google, which wasn’t even on the list four years ago, came in first, with a score of 81.85. Rounding out the top five were Johnson & Johnson (81.28), Intel (80.38), General Mills (80.30) and Kraft Foods (80.29). Microsoft, which topped the list last year, fell to 10th, with a score of 78.80.

Another example of the benefits of positive perception and good media coverage was Berkshire Hathaway, which came in sixth. “It’s an anomaly to the list because no one buys anything from them,” Mr. Fronk said. “So you’re seeing the effects of them being the safe financial port in the storm and [CEO Warren] Buffett’s reputation play out through the company itself.”

Several industries also took a beating in consumer perception. Positive perceptions of the airline industry fell five percentage points from the last survey, and insurance and financial services were down four percentage points. Technology ranked first in terms of an overall positive rating among consumers, followed by travel and tourism, retail, consumer products, telecom and — perhaps surprisingly, given high gas prices — automotive.

Marcos Frommer, manager-corporate affairs and communications at American Honda, which held the No. 9 spot in the 2007 study, up from 14 in 2006, said a company’s reputation is now more closely tied to its success than ever before. “We know that consumer purchase decisions are influenced by it, and the younger generation is making employment decisions based on corporate reputation.”

Detroit’s Big Three
Toyota was No. 15 on the list, while Detroit’s Big Three — Chrysler (No. 51), GM (No. 52) and Ford (No. 54) — limped toward the very bottom.

“The American car companies continue to suffer from a fundamental tenet of reputation: If you don’t produce a good product, you won’t get credit for any of the other things you are doing,” Mr. Fronk said. “So their investments in social responsibility and campaigns they’re doing in those areas become white noise.”

HP made not only the biggest jump from 2006 to 2007 — 21 spots, from No. 38 to No. 17 — but also the biggest jump in the history of the study. Bank of America suffered the biggest year-over-year reputation-quotient rating decline, falling to No. 49 from No. 43 in 2006.

The fate of commercial passenger ship, MV Princess of the Stars, is the latest in the list of Sulpicio Line’s maritime incidents.

In the eighties, two other passenger ships owned by Sulpico Lines, carrying a combined 2,100 passengers and crew, perished during their sea voyage.

In December 20, 1987, MV Doña Paz sank after colliding with the small oil tanker, Vector. The passenger ferry was en route from Catbalogan, Samar to Manila.

Vector, which was carrying some 8,800 barrels of petrol, ignited and caused a fire that rapidly spread onto the Doña Paz.

Two of the 13 crew members aboard the Vector survived, but all 58 crew members of the Doña Paz died.

The official death toll on the ferry is 1,565 near the number of passengers in the manifest. Survivors later reported that the ferry was overloaded and that death toll could have surpassed over 4,000.

An inquiry later revealed that the crew of the Vector was underqualified and that the boat’s license had expired.

The sinking of the MV Doña Paz is considered the world’s worst ferry disaster and the worst peace-time maritime disaster in history.

In October 24, 1988, the sinking of another of Sulpicio Lines‘ inter-island ferry boat MV Doña Marilyn came as Typhoon Ruby, swept through the Philippines.

Doña Marilyn had been carrying 451 passengers and 67 crew members.

Authorities pointed to overloading as the cause of the sinking of Doña Marilyn which reportedly killed over 600 people.

Three hundred survived the tragedy.

Tending the Flames

Across Azeroth, brilliant bonfires have been lit to signify the hottest months of the year. The chosen Flamekeepers are eager to ensure they continue burning long into the days and nights of the celebration - and they seek the aid of able explorers in doing so. Traverse the land and delve into dangerous dungeons at their behest. You may return hot, sweaty, and a little sooty…but these spiritual guides understand well the need to reward adventurers beyond the promise of “enlightenment.”

Burning Blossoms

Burning Blossoms are the currency used for the Fire Festival and are used to purchase seasonal reward items from Midsummer Suppliers and Merchants. You can collect Burning Blossoms by completing quests, including the daily quests that are part of the festival. Using them near a Fire Festival Bonfire also grants a temporary but useful buff to your character, or reignites an extinguished bonfire - but consumes the blossom in the process.

Ahune, the Frost Lord

One of the main additions to the Fire Festival this year is a new summonable boss. Level 70 players can undertake this questline that takes you to the Slave Pens to seek and defeat Ahune, the Frost Lord. Ahune is a special summonable boss, similar to the Headless Horseman, that is only available during the Fire Festival. Luma Cloudsister, located just inside the Slave Pens, directs your party to where you can find and defeat Ahune - and loot his special rewards. The loot in Heroic mode is more powerful than on normal mode and includes epic items.

Dancing Around the Ribbon Pole

At every festival camp, one of these traditional decorations stands tall beside the bonfire. Take up one of the multi-colored ribbons and dance around the pole with your friends and fellow celebrants! The activity may appear a bit frivolous for your average ferocious fighter, but even the most seasoned veteran can appreciate the resulting 10% bonus to experience from killing monsters.

Torch Tossing

So you want to be a fire juggler? If you think you have what it takes - the dexterity, the reflexes, the courage - this is your chance to prove it! Take the provided torches and look for the braziers with markers flashing above them. While standing near the bonfire, throw a torch at each brazier as soon a mark appears above it. You must hit the marked brazier before the mark fades if you want credit for the toss. It’s a good idea to place the practice torch on your action bar for easy access. After you have completed this quest, you unlock a follow-up quest to catch torches (below), and subsequently, a daily version.

Torch Catching

After successfully completing Torch Tossing, you’re ready to show that you can not only throw torches, but catch them as well. Take the provided unlit torches and stand near the bonfire. Throw a torch in the air by right-clicking it, then follow its flight path (look for the shadow it casts on the ground) and catch it when it lands. After you catch enough torches, you will unlock a daily version of this quest and Torch Tossing (above) which each grant five Burning Blossoms a day. Additionally, you will be able to toss torches to and catch torches from other players.

Unusual Activity

While celebration has its place, there are graver matters to attend to as well. When the festival began, reports began filtering in from Ashenvale about a sharp increase in Twilight Cult activity. Go to the camp just south of the Blackfathom Deeps entrance, in the ruins, and see if the cultists there will part with this information. This quest line continues on, eventually unlocking a daily quest for ten Burning Blossoms where the objective is to kill a particular enemy NPC.

Honor or Desecrate the Flame

Festival fires burn across the land, in Alliance and Horde settlements alike. If you make time to honor those of your faction, while desecrating those of the opposing faction, you will earn rewards for your efforts. You receive five Burning Blossoms for each same-faction fire you honor and ten for each opposing-faction fire you desecrate, and there are about 30 of each. Each individual fire can only be interacted with once per year. If you find them all, you can collect over 300 Burning Blossoms - which comes in handy if you wish to buy the big prizes. Additionally, if you manage to sneak into an enemy capital city to descecrate their flame, you will be rewarded with gold, a choice of consumable items, and 25 Burning Blossoms. The enemy players and guards likely won’t take too kindly to your efforts, however. To add extra incentive to keeping your flame alive, all friendly players in the vicinity of a lit flame for your faction receive a special buff that grants bonus fire damage with every attack — and this buff gets snuffed out if your flame does.

Fire in the Sky

The lengthy Midsummer Fire Festival traditionally ends with the sky itself being set alight. The goblins of Undermine have lent their considerable skill (and copious amounts of gunpowder) to the task, resulting in a tremendous fireworks show! Take up a festival mug and raise a toast to the season as the multicolored explosions dance across the sky above you!
